Recently I returned from the DOOR training centers in Nairobi, Kenya, and India. It was an amazing four months as I studied there and traveled to the various Deaf Fellowships and Deaf leadership training programs around Kenya and India. Seeing the work that God is doing in those countries through indigenous Deaf discipleship teams was life changing. Deaf people by the thousands are receiving God’s gift of salvation and then growing in Christ, reaching their communities with the Gospel message. The key element in the growth of the Deaf Church in Africa and India is the availability of God’s Word in their own language. Through DOOR’s Bible translation programs, Deaf people are able to understand God’s Word for the first time. It is God’s Word that is driving this unprecedented spiritual growth in African and Indian Deaf churches. It’s hard to imagine that Deaf communities in Africa and India are so far ahead of the American Deaf community when it comes to evangelization.
I’ve come to the Raleigh/Durham Triangle to begin the first phase of DOOR’s proven strategy for reaching the Deaf community in the US. Our first goal is to find and train local Deaf believers as evangelists, teachers and leaders for the purpose of establishing self-reproducing Deaf Believers’ Fellowships.
