SERVING IN THE TRIANGLE!

Recently I returned from the DOOR training centers in Nairobi, Kenya, and India. It was an amazing four months as I studied there and traveled to the various Deaf Fellowships and Deaf leadership training programs around Kenya and India. Seeing the work that God is doing in those countries through indigenous Deaf discipleship teams was life changing. Deaf people by the thousands are receiving God’s gift of salvation and then growing in Christ, reaching their communities with the Gospel message. The key element in the growth of the Deaf Church in Africa and India is the availability of God’s Word in their own language. Through DOOR’s Bible translation programs, Deaf people are able to understand God’s Word for the first time. It is God’s Word that is driving this unprecedented spiritual growth in African and Indian Deaf churches. It’s hard to imagine that Deaf communities in Africa and India are so far ahead of the American Deaf community when it comes to evangelization.

I’ve come to the Raleigh/Durham Triangle to begin the first phase of DOOR’s proven strategy for reaching the Deaf community in the US. Our first goal is to find and train local Deaf believers as evangelists, teachers and leaders for the purpose of establishing self-reproducing Deaf Believers’ Fellowships.

“Equipping the Deaf to Advance to Gospel”

God has called me into an amazing ministry with the Deaf. For the past 30 years I have been ministering to the Deaf on Long Island at the Island Christian Church. Approximately 20 years ago I attended a workshop in N.C. at the DOOR site. It was there I realized my vision, specifically reaching the deaf community with the Gospel of Christ, teaching and equipping the deaf to reach their full potential in their Christian walk, and empowering them to go into their own culture to reach the Deaf for Christ. At that workshop I was given a notebook with 32 Bible stories in chronological order. With that one tool I went home and began teaching the Deaf God’s Word………..

It has been an amazing four months here at DOOR-Africa/India. I no longer have one tool, but a whole tool box full of tools. I am eager to bring these tools back to the States so that the Deaf in America will have the same resources as do the Deaf in Africa and India. (Imagine that!) Specifically, having God’s Word translated into their heart Language, is the key, together with the 2×2 teams, and Deaf believers fellowships, just to mention a few. The Gospel is spreading like wildfire across Africa and India. The Deaf are being used by God to fulfill His Great Commission. They are becoming the leaders and teachers God has created them for. I want to see this in America. It is my desire to see mature Deaf Christians answer the call, going forth to spread the Gospel.

In the last ten years, thousands of Deaf people have come to Christ.

Did you know that……

When it comes to the gospel, Deaf people are one of the largest unreached, unengaged people groups in the world.

If that comes as a surprise, this video is for you.

We will answers these questions you may have.

Why Deaf people are unique among all language groups;

Why this drastically affects how they can be reached with the gospel;

How organizations like DOOR are breaking through barriers to engage, equip, and empower Deaf people in God’s kingdom!

~”A DEAF MAN’S LIFE STORY”~

A Deaf Man’s Story

CHILDHOOD STRUGGLES "I am a 54-year-old Deaf man. I was born hearing, but lost my hearing ability at age 11. My parents made a lot of efforts to see my hearing ability restored. But it never worked. Their efforts led to frustration and disappointment with the medical profession as well as faith in God. As I watched them make such effort and fail, I sank into denial and refused to transfer into a Deaf school. My growing up life was surrounded by hearing people. CONFUSION AND ANGER "As I grew older, I felt more confused being with hearing people. It was hard for me to fully fit among the hearing community. Even though I hated to admit I was Deaf, it progressively became clear to me that my significance in life would only happen if I accepted who God allowed me to be - and ask Him to show me His plan for my life. "This admission came after many years of struggle with myself; I was living a worldly life and seeing no meaning in whatever it offered me. I was deeply angry with God and life. My marriage continued in survival mode with no joy or fulfillment. When I look back now, I see how much my wife and children had to endure because of my denial and rage against God. I lived my life selfishly, with no regard for God or the many provisions he gave me. Nevertheless, God was gracious despite my sinfulness. FIRST TRANSFORMATION "My transformation journey began nine years ago when a Deaf man from DOOR introduced me to the story of God's redemption plan, which he called "five minute evangelism." He showed me God's power in creating the world and everything in it, the rebellion and sin of man against God, the destructive results of sin, and the prophecy and coming of Jesus Christ to reconcile sinful people to a loving and everlasting relationship with God the father. "By the time I met him I had begun attending Salvation Army services; that is my family church. However, just like growing up as a Deaf person, I struggled a lot to fit with their services, which, of course, are customized for hearing people. The experience made me feel as though I had to be like hearing people in order to get anywhere in life; that was depressing. Meeting the DOOR "2-by-2" Deaf leader opened me to the Word of God in a way I had never experienced before as a Deaf person. "As we continued meeting I gave my life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. When the first portion of the Bible in Kenya Sign Language was dedicated, I received a copy. The Bible in sign language has helped me grow in my faith in Jesus Christ. I always make time to watch God's Word in the language I best understand. "Even though I learned sign language as a Deaf adult, I understand more about God and His Word as I watch the Bible in Kenya Sign Language. I am fully convinced that the best way to transform Deaf people is by using the language they best understand - sign language. "Getting into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and learning his Word, which has helped me grow in faith, is the first major transformation that has taken place in my life. SECOND TRANSFORMATION "The second major transformation in my life happened when I began to attend the Deaf leaders' training taught by DOOR "2-by-2" Deaf leaders in April 2014. The principles taught at the training have helped me to be more effective in my ministry among the Deaf people in my community. TRANSFORMATION IN OTHERS "Seven months ago I started a Deaf believers' fellowship which meets weekly. Everything I learn from the leaders' training has been useful in my leadership responsibility at the Deaf fellowship. I am better equipped to teach and lead Deaf people. "When I see the willingness and thirst of Deaf people for God's Word, I can confidently say that God allowed me to be Deaf so I can be a vessel in His hands. Many Deaf people are giving their lives to Jesus Christ. "Our Thursday night fellowship is a place for learning and growing deeper in our knowledge and relationship with Jesus Christ. I am so glad that God has allowed me to see the transformation taking place among Deaf people through His Word in a language we understand. CONTENTMENT "I look forward to growing more and more as I continue with the training. My life has meaning now. I want to spend the rest of my life leading my fellow Deaf people to the knowledge of God's love, and helping them grow stronger in their relationship with Him."

Farewell to Kenya and My Family at DOOR

Friday, Jan.23rd, my family here at DOOR planned a going away service for me. It was priceless! I was overwhelmed and so blessed. The 2x2 teams who were my mentors, commissioned me for the work that I will be doing in the US. The church service included Deaf worship with an African twist, encouraging words, testimonies and a beautiful cake that Carole made.
"A Love That Will Grow", - The message Philippians 1:3-6 Every time you cross my mind, I break out in exclamations of thanks to God. Each exclamation is a trigger to prayer. I find myself praying for you with a glad heart. I am so pleased that you have continued on in this with us, believing and proclaiming God’s Message, from the day you heard it right up to the present. There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU!!!

The Deaf in Kenya are Amazing!

His Promises are Yes and Amen!

For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.    2 Corinthians 1:20

When God called me move to Kenya to live and study at the DOOR campus I was filled with excitement, and expectations, and eager to experience all God had for me there. When God opens a door – walk through it. When God closes a door; do not open it back up. Make your plan as though God will bless it and then execute it. He will reveal to you what He wants for you and don’t ever forget that His grace is sufficient for whatever come what may. That’s a promise!

The Deaf here in Kenya are amazing. They are hungry for God’s Word and because they have the Bible translated into their heart language, Kenyan sign language, the Deaf are now able to understand the love letter that God has given them, His Word. The spoken and written language in Kenya is Swahili. Does that mean the Deaf read and understand this language and are expected to use it? NO of course not.The Deaf have there own language, Kenyan Sign Language. Praise God they now have the Bible that can speak to them in their heart language.

One Deaf person said….”For the first time in my life, I learned the Bible from Deaf people in Deaf language and in Deaf culture. It’s changed my life.”

Small group is an effective way for the Deaf to come together to worship, learn God’s plan for salvation and His Word. This is one step in church planting. As the Deaf accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior and small groups grow, so does the church.

The Deaf have taught me everything I’ve learned while here at DOOR. From day one they took me into their hearts. We are truly brothers and sisters in Christ. The Deaf taught me through their worship every Wednesday morning at staff meeting. As they begin with the drum that sets the beat, the worship leader begins to worship and all follow. I stand in awe as if a testimony in itself to me, I know,  that they know and have experienced the saving power of Jesus in their lives and that they  serve an amazing God. The Deaf have taught me their beautiful Kenyan and Indian Sign Language, and how to evangelize the Deaf using the tools they have developed which I will bring back to the States.

Romans 15:21

“Those who have never been told of him will see,
and those who have never heard will understand.”

Studying Kenyan & Indian Sign Language

Studying  Kenyan & Indian Sign Language

I truly thank God for Jisha and all of the Deaf here on the DOOR Campus who patiently taught me KSL & ISL. I needed to learn these languages so I could understand and learn the things I needed to know to bring back to my missions in the US. Jisha is from Kerala, India and is here with her husband doing Bible translation editing and involved with the CIT (consultant in training) program. I will bring back the Bible translations in KSL (Kenyan Sign Language) to use as study tools with the Deaf in the States. The American Sign Language translations have not been completed as yet. PRAY they will be completed so the Deaf in the US will have a translation of Scripture in their heart language.

There are approximately 70 million Deaf in the world today. Less than 2% have any kind of relationship with Jesus Christ.

IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THE WORD OF GOD HOW CAN IT TRANSFORM YOU?

There are 400-700 signed languages in the world today, most of them yet to be discovered. Only one of them has a translation of only the New Testament: American Sign Language which is used in the US, parts of Canada and Puerto Rico. And this translation was completed in 2004, just six years ago.

EMPOWERING THE DEAF TO FULFILL THE GREAT COMMISSION

“In That day the Deaf will hear the Words of the Book…”

Hello world!

I did it! Welcome to my first blog!

Hi, this is Cindy. Welcome to my blog!  Feel free to look around and ask questions.  I would love for you to know more about Deaf people and their culture and why we are translating the Bible into sign languages. I hope this blog will answer all of your questions and help you fall in love with Deaf and their beautiful language. But most important to help you to catch the vision of Deaf reaching Deaf  for Jesus Christ here in the US and around the world.

I am working with DOOR International now training in Kenya, Africa soon to be back in the States working with the Deaf in developing the Deaf 2×2 program.

What is the 2×2 program you ask?

D.O.O.R. International sends teams of two or more well-trained Deaf leaders to unreached Deaf communities. They use the translation of God’s Word into the local sign language and DOOR ministry tools, combined with incarnational and relational ministry, for evangelism, discipleship, and the establishment of local Deaf Believers Fellowship.
